Split, Confused Over Casino Question
As reported by the Cincinnati
Enquirer: "The November ballot poses a
pretty straightforward question for this city's
voters: Shall the city manager sign an agreement
with the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma?
"But confusion
and debate are swirling around Issue 11 in Butler
County, which appears as Issue 19 in Warren
County.
"City
officials contend that passage of the issue
is vital to protecting the city's interests
if the tribe establishes a casino and resort
here.
"The
agreement would ensure that the city shares
in the casino's net revenue; Monroe would receive
money to cover costs of providing additional
roads, traffic and safety services for the development.
"In
contrast, some church leaders - who supported
petition drives that put the agreement on the
ballot - think that a 'yes' on the issue would
serve as tacit approval of casino gambling,
which they oppose on moral grounds.
"…The
proposed $250 million, Wild Creek resort complex
would straddle both counties, along Interstate
75 south of Ohio 63. It would cover almost 800
acres and would include a hotel, restaurants,
recreation areas, entertainment facilities,
shops and the casino…"
