Towards Deal with Bookies
As reported by the Advertiser:
"The AFL is poised to formalise arrangements
with two leading betting agencies that will
reap more than $1 million a year from next year.
"Agreements
with Betfair, the controversial British-based
outlet that allows punters to act as bookmakers,
and Tabcorp will be signed this week, providing
the AFL with financial and intellectual access
to some of the $300 million wagered each year
on the game.
"The
exact value of the deals, which is guaranteed
to be more than $1 million, will depend on turnover.
"Betfair
and Tabcorp will be able to use the AFL brand
for marketing purposes.
"In
return, they will open their football betting
sheets to the AFL and provide other relevant
information about transactions and fluctuations.
"…Rather
than leaving it vulnerable to controversies
involving dubious betting movements on its matches,
the AFL believes the new deals will strengthen
the workings of its gambling rules…"
