Official Admits to Embezzlement
As reported by the New Mexican:
"The former chief financial officer of the
Governor's Commission on Disability admitted she
had a gambling problem that led her to embezzle
thousands of dollars from the agency, according
to testimony at a public hearing Thursday.
"Mary Beresford, commission director, testified
Thursday that Danette Garcia, former chief financial
officer for the commission, called her in April
after questions arose about Garcia's handling of
checks from a program intended to renovate senior-citizen
housing. Beresford said Garcia offered to repay
some $6,125 that she had taken from the program
to avoid going to jail.
"…Beresford testified that she checked
with Gov. Bill Richardson's office and was told
that Garcia's situation was a matter for law enforcement.
The New Mexico State Police have investigated the
matter, and it now rests with the district attorney's
office in Santa Fe…"
