Game Law Changes Rejected
As reported by the Albany
Democrat-Herald: "For the second time in eight
months, the Albany City Council has refused to change
city policy to allow card games in public places
such as bars.
"Councilors voted 4-2 Wednesday to deny Roger
Middelstadt, who owns The Foghorn tavern at 435
Second Ave. S.E., a chance to present his card-playing
case to the panel at a special work session.
"…Last December with the same vote count,
the council declined to allow the First Round Bar
& Grill to set up four tables of 'Texas Hold'em,'
each table to seat nine players with games running
from 5 p.m. to closing on Sundays.
"…Before the council session Middelstadt,
who has owned the tavern for nearly 15 years, said
he needed to offer card gaming to make up for the
$16,000 a year he is going to lose now that the
Oregon Lottery Commission has reduced the percentage
of profit businesses can receive from the state's
gaming machines.
"He said he would not make money off of the
gambling but he expected to see an increase in beverage
and food sales…"
