Entertainment Sponsors Award Program
The California Council for Excellence
recognizes Viejas Enterprises as the first Indian
gaming organization in the United States to
become a sponsoring member of the state's Malcolm
Baldrige Award program.
Viejas
Enterprises, owned by the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay
Indians, operates one of the state's largest
and most successful Indian gaming operations
in San Diego County. Viejas was recently recognized
by CCE's Board of Directors as the first Indian
gaming organization to formally participate
in the national business excellence program.
Viejas launched its performance improvement
initiative in 2004 and is using the California
Baldrige Award criteria for continuous improvement
and organizational excellence. The Baldrige
Award criteria outlines the pursuit of excellence
for businesses in seven key areas: leadership,
strategic planning, customer and market focus,
measurement/analysis and knowledge management,
human resource focus, process management, and
results.
Viejas
Enterprises includes Viejas Casino, a 280,000
square-foot gaming facility that regularly ranks
as San Diego's favorite casino. It features
more than 2,200 slot machines, 80 table games,
bingo and off-track betting. The casino is distinguished
by five noteworthy restaurants, and a popular
nightclub venue. Across the street from Viejas
Casino is the Viejas Outlet Center, which features
57 name-brand retail stores and restaurants.
The Outlet Center is the picturesque site of
Viejas Concerts in the Park summer concert series,
which hosts some of entertainment's finest luminaries.
Viejas also owns Borrego Springs Bank, N.A,
a Native-American-owned, federally chartered,
full-service commercial financial institution.
Borrego Springs Bank has been instrumental in
assisting American Indians by developing economic
opportunities, and by financing tribal government
projects. The Viejas Band is a member of the
Four Fires and the Three Fires partnerships,
economic affiliations among several tribes which
have developed Marriott hotels in Washington
D.C, and in Sacramento, CA.
Additionally,
the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians is owner
of a 50-percent interest in the Broadcast Company
of the Americas (BCA). BCA operates The Mighty
1090, XPRS AM, the Padres station, XHBCE FM,
La Pantera, and XAPE AM 1700.
