Elders
Protest Alberta Casino Plans
As reported by the CBC: "Three
senior citizens are blocking a road on the Stoney
First Nation in a bid to halt construction of
a $27-million casino in the community.
"Eliza Holloway,
one of the elders, says the proposed casino
is being built on her land, near the TransCanada
Highway at the Kananaskis turnoff. And all three
are opposed to the casino in principal, arguing
that other addictions are already devastating
the community. Lawyer Doug Ray says the blockade
is illegal, and the band will use the RCMP to
get the project going.
"…Holloway
and the two other women – aged 68 to 77
– staged a walk from Calgary to Canmore
this summer to call attention to their opposition
to the project…"
