AG: Casino Deal is Illegal
As reported by the Indiana Post-Tribune:
"Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter's
office labeled a politically connected East
Chicago company's deal with the city's casino
as illegal in a court brief filed this week.
"Carter
asked the court to allow Marion Superior Court
to allow his office to intervene in a civil
suit, filed April 15, by Second Century against
Resorts and the city of East Chicago in which
the company is asking the judge to uphold its
contract.
"In
November, the Indiana Gaming Commission asked
the attorney general to review Second Century's
contract with Resorts East Chicago.
"East
Chicago officials asked the state to toss out
the contract in April, when the casino's license
was moved from the former owner, Harrah's International,
to Resorts.
"Second
Century is run by politically connected businessmen
Michael Pannos and Robert Cappas. It receives
three-fourths of 1 percent of the casino's gross
profits under a 10-year-old agreement worked
out under the administration of former Mayor
Robert Pastrick…"
