Massachusetts
Considers Slots for Tracks
As reported by the San Jose
Business Journal: "The California Assembly
has upped the ante on charity poker by approving
legislation that would allow a wide variety
of nonprofits to hold fundraisers using gambling.
"The
next 18 months will determine whether that tradition
survives intact.
"In
the spring, the state Legislature will consider
legalizing slot machines at Raynham Park and
the state's other three racetracks. Slot machines
could mean millions in new revenue, but making
Raynham into what is known as a 'racino' --
a gambling venue akin to a casino -- would alter
what has become an institution in Southeastern
Massachusetts. Elsewhere in the country, the
live races have become almost afterthoughts
to the slot machines.
"…These
two controversial issues -- expanded gambling
and banning dog racing -- are potentially linked,
with slot machines offering an alternate revenue
source should voters outlaw the sport.
"…Raynham
Park owner George Carney said he is prepared
to battle on both fronts -- for slot machines
and against the prohibition of dog racing…"
