Promoters Surprised by Opposition
As reported by the Gettysburg
Times: "A vote Tuesday night indicating
apparently unanimous opposition in the Pa. House
of Representatives to a casino near the Gettysburg
battlefield caught the casino's promoters by
surprise.
"In
a 199-0 vote, with some of the 203 members unavailable,
the House approved language that would prohibit
a casino being built in any sixth class county
with a population up to 93,000, as reported
in the 2000 census. Of the state's 67 counties,
only Adams County fits that description
"'Were
we surprised by this? Yes,' Chance CEO and president
David LeVan said Thursday evening. 'Were we
surprised that (Rep. Stephen R.) Maitland would
try this maneuver? No.'
"…But
he questioned the tactics of organizations such
as the Civil War Preservation Trust, which has
named Gettysburg at the top of its list of endangered
battlefields, and named the casino as a main
contributor to that risk.
"He
also objected to some misleading statements
by No Casino Gettysburg…"
