Golf
Betting Column: What The Golfinggods Say….
How much confidence does
a golfer get from winning a golf tournament?
The answer, shown by Michael Campbell and Jason
Gore over the past week is a lot. Both players
have had years that have taken them to a higher
level.
Mr Campbell of course broke through
at Pinehurst to capture his first major tournament.
The huge boost to his confidence this created
allowed him to claim the HSBC Match Play tournament
and a cheque for £1 million. And his new
found belief was evident throughout the tournament
when at times he did not play his best but got
the job done. Even in the final against Ireland's
Paul McGinely he did not falter when a three-hole
lead was reduced to all square. He then produced
the shots and the pressure required to force
his opponent to make mistakes. Of course this
victory will now cap off the best year of his
career, which is amazing considering he missed
the first five cuts of the season!
Jason Gore has also provided the Cinderella
story of the year on the US PGA tour. While
Campbell was winning the US Open Jason was attracting
fans to his efforts in the first three rounds
of the championship. Some of us thought that
was all we would hear of the burly player but
he has roared back into our conscience with
three victories in succession on the Nationwide
tour and then victory in the 84 Lumber Classic.
He is a talent that is now here to stay and
he can keep getting better. Simply a brilliant
story.
The US PGA tour now heads to San Antonio, Texas
for the Valero Texas Open which is played at
the LaCantera G.C. Although this is a par 70
course accuracy is not the key this week with
the fairways generous and the greens larger
than normal. The key this week revolves around
the putter and how well people are putting.
Without saying this tournament is a putting
competition it does have a strong history of
finding winners who are leading the putting
statistics for that week.
Selections:
Ben Crane: already won this year and is in
as good a form as anyone right now. He is also
one of the best putters on tour and must go
close this week.
Nick Price: still a great ball striker and
can hole some putts when in the mood. His game
may not be as sharp as past years but against
a weak tournament field like this one he will
be competitive.
Jesper Parnevik: has started to find his game
again after a few years in the wilderness. His
ball flight and distance control is back and
he is hitting a number of fairways now. If he
can remember that winning feeling again then
I see no reason why he will not go close this
week.
Others to mention: J.L Lewis, K.J Choi and
Bob Estes.
The European tour this week is dominated by
the Seve Trophy – a Ryder Cup style battle
between Great Britain and Ireland and Continental
Europe.
The Great Britain and Ireland team looks on
paper to have the upper hand, but in match play
anything could happen although I think they
should win this year.
As it is a match play style event played in
teams and singles I cannot give individual tips
for the event.
Until next week – May The Golfinggods
