Proposed for Michigan Fairgrounds
As reported by the Detroit Free
Press: "The shovels are busy at MGM Grand
Detroit Casino 's permanent site while a group
of businessmen suggested Monday that the city's
three casinos ought to build at the state fairgrounds
as part of a massive entertainment area.
"'I'm
saying stop it. These are terrible locations,'
Professor William Thompson of the University
of Nevada, Las Vegas, said of the permanent
casino locations spread out from one end of
downtown to the other.
"…Thompson,
in a speech to the Detroit City Council, said
that if Detroit followed Las Vegas' example
of clustering its casinos together, it could
boost traffic at all three.
"…The
casinos are in various stages of proceeding
with permanent complexes to include 400-room
hotels, 100,000 square feet of gaming space,
conference space, restaurants and theaters.
MotorCity Casino at the Lodge Freeway and Grand
River expects to break ground soon. Greektown
Casino goes before the Michigan Gaming Control
Board today for approval of its financing to
build a permanent facility in Greektown…"
