Mariner: "The first roll call vote ever
taken on slot machines in the Senate paid out
handsomely for the proponents of expanded gambling
Thursday, as senators approved the installation
of 8,000 slots at the state's four racetracks.

said the policy change would make it possible
to restore programs cut during the fiscal crisis,
create thousands of new jobs, and protect several
tracks from closing - should approval of slots
withstand the many procedural and political
challenges still remaining
"The 26-9 vote included 'yeas' from several
leaders in the Upper Branch, including Senate
President Robert Travaglini, who has a racetrack
