Legislation Could Lead to More Casinos

Clarion Ledger: "Legislation allowing Gulf
Coast casinos to move 800 feet onshore could
mean several new casino ventures, predicts one
Jackson gaming lawyer.
"'If the number of calls and
contacts we've been getting over the last two
to three weeks is any indication, it would result
in an increase in the number of new casinos,'
said Scott Andress, a Jackson gaming lawyer.
"Gov. Haley Barbour is expected to sign
this week the bill authorizing the move for
Gulf Coast casinos from water to shore.
"…Andress said developers find it
attractive to build casinos onshore because
construction costs would be lower than on a
barge, and it's projected that insurance would
be more affordable than if casinos were required
to build over water…"
