Casino Dispute Put on Hold

Union Tribune: "A dispute between Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Jamul Indian band
over land-clearing for the tribe's controversial
hotel-casino is on hold, tribal and state officials
said Monday.
"Friday,
for the second time in a month, leaders of the
East County tribe met in Sacramento with state
attorneys to discuss pre-construction work that
Schwarzenegger contends violated Jamul's 1999
gambling compact.
"The
tribe denies wrongdoing, and no further steps
to resolve the disagreement are expected for
at least a month, officials said.
"In
December, Schwarzenegger accused the tribe of
initiating construction of its proposed $200
million project before an environmental review.
His main complaint was the removal of seven
of the reservation's 13 homes, relocated between
September and November to begin clearing the
site…"
