Leaders Unite Against Buffalo Casino
As reported by the Buffalo
News: "A coalition of Western New York
religious leaders, including Bishop Edward U.
Kmiec of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, reiterated
staunch opposition to a proposed casino in Buffalo
and maintained that there is still time to block
the casino.
"A dozen members of the Network
of Religious Communities, the area's largest
interfaith group, condemned the casino proposal
during a press conference Wednesday in the network
offices on Delaware Avenue.
"Among them was Kmiec, who first voiced
his disapproval of a casino in July in a strongly
worded letter to Mayor Anthony M. Masiello.
"Kmiec again pointed to cities that already
have casinos in arguing that a gambling facility
here would only serve to make the area's poor
people even poorer.
"…More than 30 clergy and religious
organizations signed a resolution calling on
Masiello to reverse his support for the casino
and the Seneca Nation of Indians to drop their
plans.
"Representatives from the Hindu community,
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
Muslim Public Affairs Council, Unitarian Universalist
Church of Buffalo, Presbytery of Western New
York, United Methodist Church and Council of
Orthodox Christian Churches of the Niagara Frontier
also voiced concerns…"
