Developers Look at Options
As reported by the Wichita
Eagle: "Frustrated that Sedgwick County
won't allow residents to vote on casino gambling,
backers of a proposed Park City casino are looking
elsewhere for the project.
"'For the foreseeable future,
there won't be a project in this area,' said
former Wichita Mayor Bob Knight, who has been
representing the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska
in a $270 million resort casino venture.
"Knight said investors are considering
other counties, which he wouldn't identify,
as well as the tribe's reservation in northeast
Kansas.
"Knight made the comments after he appeared
at Wednesday's Sedgwick County Commission meeting
to ask for a vote on casinos.
"In August, county commissioners said
they would consider an advisory referendum,
but later voted to defer the referendum indefinitely
after hearing objections from a group of conservative
Republican state legislators.
"…Knight said Las Vegas is the leading
destination for people flying out of Wichita's
Mid-Continent Airport, and pointed out that
a casino will be built just across the Oklahoma
border from Arkansas City, 50 miles south of
Wichita…"
