Casino Opens
As reported by the Kathmandu
Post: "Pokhara's first casino is opening
at Phulbari Resort and Spa with aim of attracting
more tourists for gambling delights in the country's
major tourism destination which has been suffering
steep decline in tourist arrivals lately.
"'Casino
Rad in Kathmandu has taken the responsibility
to run the casino at this resort' said Mahesh
Dewan, executive assistant manager of Phulbari
Resort and Spa, talking to the Post.
"…The
casino is expected to shore up business confidence
of tourism entrepreneurs which has touched rock
bottom with tourism industry slackening and
a number of hotels closing down due to financial
crunch.
"…At
present, the country has six casinos in total,
all located in the capital. The history of casino
in Nepal dates back to 1968 when the first casino
in the country, Casino Nepal commenced operation.
Nepal is considered to be a popular destination
among gamblers in South Asia. Besides Sri Lanka,
it is the only country in South Asia to award
license to operate casinos. Casino operation
in Pokhara is expected to lure more tourists
in this picturesque city, where tourism has
been hit hard due to the ongoing conflict…"
