Survey: Filipinos
Believe Arroyo Linked to Jueteng
As reported by the Manila
Sun Star: "Eight in 10 Filipinos believe that
some members of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's
family are involved in and benefit from jueteng
operations, a July 2 to 14 survey of Pulse Asia
showed.
"The survey, which had 1,200 respondents,
showed that 81 percent of Filipinos believe the
allegation of jueteng involvement among some of
Arroyo's family members. Only 16 percent believe
otherwise.
"The figure is three percentage points more
than the 78 percent of believers in June.
"Most of the believers are from Metro Manila
and Mindanao (87 percent each), followed by Luzon
(84 percent). Only 62 percent from the Visayas -
where Arroyo had the widest support - believe in
the allegations.
"…About 71 percent believe the allegations
to be true, a seven percent increase from the 64
percent in June.
"…For 54 percent of Filipinos, the legalization
of jueteng would only make things worse for the
country…"
