Would Legalize Charity Casino Nights
As reported by the Daily Review:
"For years, many nonprofit groups in the
Hayward area and around the state have organized
casino nights to help raise money for their
charitable work.
"Little
did they know they may have been breaking the
law.
"…State
laws barring certain forms of gambling, it turns
out, allow no exception for groups raising money
for charitable causes — even if only nonmonetary
prizes are offered.
"…Now,
legislation introduced by Newark Assemblyman
Alberto Torrico would allow these organizations
to raise much-needed money without fear of legal
reprisal.
"Assembly
Bill 839, which also is sponsored by Attorney
General Bill Lockyer, would revise the Gambling
Control Act to allow nonprofit organizations
that are at least three years old to hold one
casino night a year.
"The
bill passed the Assembly on Monday…"
