Casino Vote Reflects Concerns

Commonwealth News: "Varying concerns prompted
House members from the Greenwood area to vote
differently on Friday's casino bill. State Rep.
"May Whittington said she voted
to permit Gulf Coast casinos to locate up to
800 feet inland out of a concern for safety.
"The bill passed the House on a 60 to
53 vote and is now in the state Senate.
"The state Senate's Finance Committee
approved the bill late Friday night. Action
on the bill by the entire Senate halted at midnight
Friday. The Senate will reconvene at 2 p.m.
Monday.
"…State Rep. Bobby Howell, R-Kilmichael,
opposed the bill, which Republican Gov. Haley
Barbour has pushed.
"Howell said the Legislature addressed
some of the concerns of the casinos in the last
session…"
